Adrien leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. His thoughts drifted. Unbidden, Eleanor came into his mind. He realized with an evanescent sixth sense that she reminded him only of his grief for the loss of his child, and he had grieved long enough. He needed to wash his mind of the past. He knew it as well as he knew the lines around his eyes or the scent he left behind in the swamp when he went hunting.

Recalling Mrs Prejean’s fortune-telling, he smiled. If Jennifer knew the old lady had predicted that he and Jennifer would have a long, happy marriage, five children, and grow wealthy in years to come, Jennifer would not have sat so complacent across from him a few minutes ago. His thoughts slipped to the previous evening. Pleasant nightmares. He chuckled. How cute and appealing she looked in her pajamas. How kissable her lips. By and by gremlins pestered him and became acutely active, making it impossible for him to sit still.

He blinked several times, heaved himself out of his chair and returned to the barns and to work his cattle.
